Children need to learn how to be independent as soon as they can. When they learn this, they can do things with little help from other people. Learning this is essentially a step towards self-sufficiency.

As a preschool in Maryland, we want to impart some knowledge to parents on how they can help their children become independent individuals. The process may not be as complicated as they think.

Teaching independence can start at home. Parents should try to delegate doable tasks for kids to perform regularly. This can help them realize that they are capable of doing things on their own. As time goes by, parents can delegate tasks that progressively become more complex.

Independence can also be taught at school. Schools require children to do homework and other activities. An institution such as a Montessori school even encourages hands-on learning, which can be helpful to the development of independence.

Of course, parents should also learn to step back and let their kids explore the world on their own. Yes, parents are responsible for the needs of their children. But being there for them all the time at any given time and place can stop them from exploring their independence.
